Installing the Engine Bay Cross Braces in an Aston Martin DB9

If you’ve had to access something under the Engine Bay Cross Braces in your DB9 (like me changing my Coil Packs and Spark Plugs) you eventually need to get them reinstalled.   This is likely one of your final steps under the hood, and you will be feeling the elation of completing your project and will be anxious to get onto more important matters like ‘starting her up’.   Getting this done right is important because if you don’t do it properly, you can get some oddball squeaking from your front end. Installing the Intake Manifold Brace on an Aston Martin DB9

If you’ve been servicing your fuel injection system or doing something that requires you to remove your Intake Manifolds (like me dealing with a Lumpy Idle situation) you’ve had your Intake Manifold Brace off.   The brace is used to link the Left and Right manifolds providing extra stability.  The manifolds cantilever off their mounting points, so this brace gives them the structural support.  You can check this out – before you mount the brace grab the outside edge of the manifold and give it a pull up and down, and notice how it will move some.  Try this again after the brace is installed, it will be solid. Reconnecting the Intake Manifold Ancillaries on an Aston Martin DB9

After you’ve gone through removing and installing your actual Intake Manifolds (like I just did as part of fixing a Lumpy Idle situation) you are in the home stretch of getting your DB9 back on the road.  In this post I will cover reconnecting all the ancillary connections that link up to the Intake Manifolds, things we disconnected along the way and certainly can’t be forgotten.   Some of the steps are just reversing the removal process, but a few have a some technique to them and I will share what I learned along the way with you here. Installing the Fuel Injectors and Fuel Rails in an Aston Martin DB9

If you’ve had your fuel injectors out as part of a larger project (like me dealing with a Lumpy Idle situation) or maybe you are just changing one (or more) of them, you need to know how to properly prepare and install them.  Your tasks will include getting them properly mated up with the fuel rails again, plus making all the electrical and vacuum connections.   Needless to say – I have a few tips to share. Installing the Intake Manifolds into an Aston Martin DB9

Without a doubt the most difficult part of changing my spark plugs and coils packs (I was dealing with a Lumpy Idle misfire) was removing the giant and beautiful Intake Manifolds.   Really it boiled down to the huge PITA it is to get to the rear most bolts, but at the end it was manageable.   When it’s time to reinstall the manifolds it would be easy to say “Installation is just the reversal of the steps to remove it”.   In many ways it is, but there are all sorts of tips I can share along the way to make the process go easier for you. Continue reading “Installing the Intake Manifolds into an Aston Martin DB9”

Installing the Spark Plug Covers on an Aston Martin DB9

The spark plugs and coil packs in a DB9 are snugly tucked away under a Spark Plug Cover.   If you’ve had the cover off to perhaps change your Coil Packs and Spark Plugs (as I have been doing as part of dealing with a Lumpy Idle issue), you’ll inevitably need to reinstall the cover.   Doing this isn’t hard, but there are a few tips I will share below to get it done just right. You may be installing Coil Packs into your DB9 as part of a scheduled service or as part of some other service issue.  I am swapping mine out as part of solving a Lumpy Idle issue (check out my post on this).  Regardless of the reason, getting it done right is important.  In this post I will cover preparing the coil packs plus how to install them properly. Removing the Spark Plugs from an Aston Martin DB9

spark-plug-being-removed-from-an-aston-martin-db9You may need to remove the Spark Plugs from your DB9 to replace them at a scheduled service interval or as part of some other service procedure (like doing a compression test or removing the valve cover, etc.).  This is a fairly simple procedure once you have all the preliminaries out of the way, but there are a few  small tricks to it I will share with you below. Removing the Coil Packs from an Aston Martin DB9

removing-the-coil-packs-from-an-aston-martin-db9Each cylinder in your DB9 V12 engine has its own individual coil pack installed on top of the spark plug right down in the valve cover area.   You might need to remove the coil packs to replace them, or service the spark plugs, or to remove the valve cover or something deeper in the engine.   I’m replacing mine since my car is suffering from a Lumpy Idle (see my post on this).  Removing them is pretty easy once you have the preliminary work necessary to access them out of the way.
